Warning: Your Air Conditioning System Is Not a Dedicated Dehumidifier

Monday, August 17th, 2015

High humidity is a major problem with staying cool during the summer. Especially during the late summer. The high levels of moisture in the air make it harder for your body to release heat through sweating, and that trapped heat makes the hot temperatures feel even hotter. There isn’t much you can about this when you’re outside… but you can change it inside your home.

3 Air Conditioning Components You Should Know More About

Friday, April 3rd, 2015

Most homeowners know very little about what goes on inside of the air conditioning system. And for the most part, this is okay. Why should you have to worry about the inner workings of your AC when you can call technicians to take care of AC services for you? For the most part, all you have to do is program your thermostat and let the system do the rest. But if you want to prevent problems from occurring with your air conditioning unit—or even prevent damage to your home—you may want to get a little more familiar with some of the key components featured in this guide. And call the friendly technicians at Malek Heating and cooling when you’re ready to schedule air conditioning services in Evanston, IL.

  • Air Filter – You probably know that the air filter helps your family breathe a little easier by filtering out some common contaminants. But you may not know just how much damage a dirty filter can do. When the filter is clogged, air cannot get through, but your unit is designed to let in a certain amount of airflow. Without it, the evaporator coil can freeze over, and many of the components could falter as a result.
  • Thermostat – Now, you probably already know the basics of how to use your home thermostat. But are you taking advantage of all of the features yours has to offer? Make sure to program your thermostat to cool your home at an efficient temperature when you are home, and to raise the temperature (or shut off the system) when you’re away. Try not to frequently adjust your thermostat or set it to a lower setting than is necessary, as this will reflect on your energy bills.
  • Condensate Drain – This is a part you may be less familiar with, but it’s important to know that your air conditioner can leak and cause some major damage to the home, especially if your unit leaks through your ceiling and into your home. Have a technician visit for air conditioning maintenance to prevent this possibility.

Call Malek Heating & Cooling for professional air conditioning service in Evanston, IL. Whether it’s maintenance, repairs, installation, or replacement that you need, our qualified team is here to handle in for you.

Repairs That Your Heat Pump May Need

Wednesday, January 21st, 2015

Heat pumps have a unique construction and operation that sets them apart from other heating systems. This also happens to make their repair needs unique. Though you should always call a professional HVAC technician to address any issues with your heating system, it pays to know a bit more about how your heating system works. With that in mind, take a look at these repairs that your heat pump may need.

Broken Reversing Valve

The reversing valve is a 4-way junction in the refrigerant line between the indoor and outdoor units of the heat pump. This valve determines which way the refrigerant flows through the system, depending on the position it’s in. This is what makes the heat pump capable of both heating and cooling functions. The valve is comprised of a chamber that contains a slide. This slide has two positions, one for each refrigerant direction. Attached to the slide is an electromagnet called a “solenoid.” When the solenoid is charged, it pulls the slide to one side of the chamber. When the solenoid is not charged, the slide drops to the default position.

A reversing valve can break in two primary ways. The first way is that the slide becomes stuck in the chamber, preventing it from directing the refrigerant flow. The second way is that the solenoid loses its magnetism, rendering it unable to pull the slide from one side of the valve to the other. If the slide is stuck, a technician simply has to open the valve and free it. If the solenoid loses its magnetism, however, it will have to be replaced.

Broken Defrost Cycle

During cold days, the outdoor unit of the heat pump can have ice buildup on the outside of the casing. If the ice manages to cover most or all of the unit, it will cut off the unit’s ability to siphon heat. Normally, the heat pump uses a defrost cycle to melt the ice off of the unit. If you notice that your outdoor unit is mostly or entirely covered in ice, however, that means the defrost cycle isn’t working. You’ll need to call a professional to fix it.

If your heat pump is having issues, call Malek Heating & Cooling to schedule a service appointment. We provide professional heating repair in Evanston, IL.
