Some Ways You Can Use a Ductless Mini Split System in Your Home

Have you heard of ductless mini splits? If you haven’t been totally satisfied with how you’re cooling and heating your home, if you’re worried about efficiency, or if the needs of your home or family are changing, this system could resolve all your concerns.

If you’re unfamiliar with this concept, we’d like to give you some information about these systems. Ductless mini splits can be used in a variety of ways to meet many different home heating and cooling needs. Here are the details.

Mini Splits Cut Your Energy Bills

A ductless mini split can save you money on your utility bills in two major ways.

  • Eliminating Ducts: Because ductwork is so easily damaged, and even without damage it deteriorates over time, it’s estimated that 30% of the costly heated and cooled air in American homes is lost through duct leaks. When your system doesn’t use the ducts, it doesn’t waste all that energy.
  • Reducing Heating Costs: In our climate, it’s not possible to use a heat pump to provide all necessary heat with no auxiliary system all winter long. But you can dramatically reduce the use of a less-efficient heating system by using a heat pump all spring and fall, and whenever temperatures allow. It will consume a fraction of the energy of other heating systems.

Mini Splits Provide Better Comfort

In northern parts of the US and in places where many homes are more than fifty years old, it’s common for homes to lack ductwork entirely. If you’ve been using window AC units, you simply haven’t been able to have even cooling. With a mini split, you’ll have air handlers throughout your home, each with a separate thermostat for precise comfort.

Or perhaps your home does have ductwork, and your discomfort is coming from breathing too much dusty air as it blows out your vents. Ductwork is an ideal place for dust, allergens, mold, and bacteria to develop. A mini split can improve your home’s air quality and your respiratory health by reducing or eliminating the need to use ducts and circulate those irritants.

Mini Splits Are Great for Expansions

There are times when a homeowner is perfectly happy with their existing heating and cooling systems, but a change to their home means that their HVAC needs are also changing. This can happen when an addition is built, or when a previously-unfinished space is renovated to become a living space.

If you’ve added to your home or turned a garage or attic into an extra room or in-law apartment, it might put excess strain on your furnace or air conditioner to try to heat or cool that space. And you’ll either have to add ductwork or accept that the temperature is always uneven. But with the addition of a small mini-split system, you can provide comfort as well as individual control in that extra space.

There are so many ways that going ductless might improve your comfort and quality of life, and so many options for ductless systems. (We particularly like the Mitsubishi mini split system in Skokie, IL.) We’d love to have a conversation with you about how one of these options might work in your home to meet your family’s unique needs. Don’t hesitate to reach out!
